Handball Queensland Queensland Team Handball Assn Inc.
Queensland Team Handball Association Inc (Handball Queensland) was founded in 1983. Handball Queensland (HA) is the official State Sporting Organisation for the Olympic sport of handball in Queensland and all disciplines of the sport.
Handball Queensland is affiliated with Q Sport and the Queensland Olympic Committee. Through affiliation with Handball Australia (HA), Handball Queensland is also a member of the Oceania Continental Handball Federation and the International Handball Federation.
Our History
Handball - a Summer Olympics Sport
Handball originated in Europe in the 19th century. The current form of indoor handball commenced in October 1917 when the modern rules were published.
Men’s Handball emerged on the Olympic Stage in 1936 as an outdoor field sport and was introduced as an indoor sport at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games with the women’s competition being added in 1976. Handball has been a feature at every Olympic Games since then with competition in both genders.
Australia competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and has a two-step qualification pathway to the Summer Olympic Games through being the top placed Oceania Continental Handball Federation team at the Asian Handball Championships.

The governing body for handball is the International Handball Federation World Championships are held on a 2 year cycle.
Europe
The premier handball competition in the world is the European Handball Federation Champions League
In Asia
Australia’s pathway to the World Championships is via qualification in the Asian Handball Federation Championships for Men and Women held every 2 years.
In our Region
The Oceania Continent Handball Federation is the governing body for the Olympic Sport of Handball in Oceania, in which Australia has full member status.
Handball - A Game for all ages
Handball is a game that can be enjoyed by all ages from Kindergarten through to Over 65’s. Participation is modified to suit all ages.
The Handball Federation of Europe has developed its Circle of Life Program and published its findings in the attached document.
